Antlia Engineering Unveils AODD Pump Guide to Help Industrial Buyers Avoid Costly Selection Mistakes

Antlia Engineering Works has released a free technical guide explaining seven common AODD pump myths, covering material selection, energy costs, diaphragm performance and key factors industrial buyers should assess.

Antlia Engineering Works, an ISO 9001:2015 certified Indian manufacturer of industrial pumps, has released a technical guide titled “AODD Pump: 7 Myths vs Facts Every Industrial Manufacturer Should Know”. The guide aims to help plant engineers, procurement professionals and industrial buyers make informed decisions when selecting Air Operated Double Diaphragm (AODD) pumps. It is available free of charge on the company's website.

The guide highlights seven common misconceptions about AODD pumps and explains how incorrect equipment specifications can lead to corrosion, leakage, premature component failure, unplanned downtime and avoidable operating costs. It also examines the factors industrial buyers should consider before selecting a pump, including chemical compatibility, operating pressure, material of construction, maintenance requirements and long-term reliability.

Industrial fluid transfer plays an important role in chemical manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, paints and coatings, food processing, printing and several other industries. Selecting an appropriate pump requires more than matching the equipment to a required flow rate. Viscosity, temperature, solids content, discharge pressure and the chemical properties of the fluid also influence pump performance and operating costs.

Meet Jain, Founder of Antlia Engineering Works, said the company regularly interacts with buyers who select pumps based primarily on size or price, or assume that one material or pump type can handle every fluid. He said incorrect specifications can result in corrosion, leakage and unplanned downtime. The guide has been developed to provide buyers with practical information before they make purchasing decisions.

One of the key points highlighted in the guide is that not all diaphragm pumps operate in the same way. AODD pumps use compressed air to drive two diaphragms through an air distribution system, while other diaphragm pump designs depend on mechanical or hydraulic actuation. AODD pumps are suitable for applications requiring self-priming capability, variable flow, tolerance to dry running under specified conditions and the transfer of certain challenging fluids.

The guide advises buyers to evaluate flow requirements, discharge pressure, viscosity, temperature, solids content and chemical compatibility rather than relying solely on pump size or purchase price.

Material selection is another important consideration. Polypropylene (PP), PVDF, stainless steel SS-316 and aluminium are used for different fluids and operating conditions. The guide emphasises that material selection must be based on the actual chemical, its concentration, operating temperature and pressure. No single material should be considered universally compatible with every chemical.

The guide also addresses the misconception that AODD pumps have no energy costs because they do not require an electric motor at the pumping point. Although the absence of an electric motor can be beneficial in applications where electrical equipment is undesirable, these pumps depend on compressed air generated by a compressor. Their overall operating costs are influenced by compressor efficiency, pump air consumption, operating pressure, system leakage and running hours. Correct pump sizing is therefore essential when assessing the total cost of ownership.

Another misconception concerns the use of PTFE diaphragms. While PTFE offers broad chemical resistance, diaphragm service life also depends on flexibility, temperature, pressure cycling and mechanical fatigue. Materials such as Santoprene and Neoprene may be more suitable for specific applications. The guide cautions against selecting diaphragms based exclusively on chemical resistance ratings.

AODD pumps are also not restricted to chemical manufacturing facilities. According to the guide, their applications extend to pharmaceutical manufacturing, paints and coatings, printing and packaging, wastewater treatment, mining and mineral processing, adhesives and specialty chemicals, oil and petroleum-related uses, and food and beverage processing with suitable hygienic configurations.

The guide further challenges the assumption that imported pumps are automatically superior to domestically manufactured alternatives. It states that pump quality depends on design, material specifications, testing and performance under actual operating conditions rather than the country of manufacture. Buyers are encouraged to assess suppliers using measurable parameters, including quality control procedures, spare parts availability, technical support, delivery lead times and total cost of ownership.

Jain said Indian buyers should evaluate domestic and imported suppliers using the same measurable criteria, particularly when selecting critical equipment. These include material specifications, testing standards, spare parts availability, technical support and delivery timelines. He added that Indian manufacturers meeting these requirements can provide practical alternatives for several industrial applications, supported by faster response and local service.

The guide also explains that AODD pumps are not suitable for every fluid transfer requirement. Centrifugal pumps are often preferred for continuous transfer of compatible, relatively low-viscosity fluids when the required flow and head match the pump curve. Barrel pumps, meanwhile, are designed to transfer liquids directly from drums and barrels. AODD pumps are generally favoured in applications requiring pneumatic operation, variable flow, self-priming capability or the handling of certain viscous and solids-containing fluids.

Alongside the seven myths and facts, Antlia Engineering Works has included a buyer's checklist covering key considerations before purchasing an AODD pump. These include identifying the actual process flow requirement and discharge pressure in relation to the available compressed air pressure; selecting chemically compatible wetted materials and an appropriate diaphragm; evaluating air consumption against compressor capacity; and checking spare parts availability, servicing requirements, technical support and the manufacturer's delivery commitments.

Jain said that a properly selected pump can support reliable fluid transfer, reduce maintenance interruptions and improve process efficiency, adding that these are the outcomes the company aims to deliver for its customers.

The guide also highlights the capabilities of Indian pump manufacturers serving the country's chemical, pharmaceutical, paints, coatings and specialty chemical industries, where application-specific fluid-handling equipment is required.

Antlia Engineering Works is an Indian industrial pump manufacturer based in Mumbai and established in 2017. The company initially focused on Air Operated Double Diaphragm pumps and has since expanded its product range to include barrel pumps and centrifugal monobloc pumps. Its AODD pumps are available in multiple sizes and materials of construction, including PP, PVDF, aluminium and SS-316, depending on the model and application.

The company is ISO 9001:2015 certified, Ministry of Defence approved and GeM registered. It also exports its products to more than 20 countries. Its latest technical guide seeks to help industrial buyers evaluate pump specifications, material compatibility, operating costs and supplier capabilities before making equipment procurement decisions.
